The standard dermaroller which is used for acne scars is a drum like shaped roller, studded meticulously with 192 fine microneedles in 8 rows, 0.5-1.5 mm in length and 0.1 mm in diameter. The microneedles are highly synthesized by ion etching techniques which are reactive on medical-grade stainless steel or silicon. We at Kiara pre-sterilized the instrument via the gamma irradiation.
Microneedling is an office-based simple procedure. The area which is to be treated is numbed with topical anesthesia for 45 minutes to 1 hour. After preparing the area nicely, rolling is performed 15-20 times in horizontal, oblique and vertical directions; pin-point bleeding or Petechiae which may occur is easily controlled. After treatment, the area is wetted and hydrated with saline pads. The entire procedure usually lasts for 15 to 20 minutes, depending profusely on the extent of the area to be treated.
A minimum of 6 weeks is recommended between two treatments because it takes that long for new natural collagen to get produced. Three to four treatments could be needed for moderate acne scars.
- Ensure the centre Use good quality instruments—there are many instruments from different companies; using poor instruments may lead to breakage of needles in the skin.
- Be prepared that multiple sessions may be needed.
- Other treatments such as punch elevation, subcision may be needed for optimal results in acne scars.
- Allow an interval of 4-6 weeks between the procedures to get good results.
